Looking to experience the culinary side of New York’s history?

Look no further than these five classic restaurants that have been cherished by local New Yorkers for generations, all of which were founded before the turn of the 19th century.

Enjoy!

Fraunces Tavern NYC restaurant
Fraunces Tavern NYC restaurant today 2021

1. Fraunces Tavern (1762)

Fraunces Tavern is the city’s oldest restaurant, with a history reaching back to 1762. The history of the building itself is a point of discussion. While the brick structure that would become the restaurant’s home dates from between 1719 and 1722, it has been rebuilt and modified numerous times, leading some to question whether it can truly claim to be as old and authentic as it claims.

Fraunces Tavern’s continued existence is truly a miracle of perseverance. Aside from the errant cannonball, the building has survived three fires and a bombing by a Puerto Rican paramilitary organization in 1975, which killed four persons inside. The museum that lies directly above the restaurant today tells the fascinating narrative of the eatery.

George Washington and the Sons of Liberty met here.

Type of Food: American (Traditional,) Bars, Breakfast and Lunch

Ear Inn 1817

2. Ear Inn (1817)

You’d never guess the story of the Ear Inn, which is tucked away on the far west side of Soho. Despite its long history, this quaint beer and burger business went by the name of “B” until the 1970s, when the owners covered the circular parts of the “B” with an illuminated “Bar” sign outside and the catchy name appeared.

In the early twentieth century, food and restaurant service became popular. The tavern was turned into a speakeasy during Prohibition and reopened to the public after the adoption of the 21st Amendment. The Ear Inn is a popular venue for a drink or a bite to eat, with nautical-themed decor and flowering flowerpots hanging outside. They’ve also established a “farm to table” philosophy, which means that even bar snacks are made using locally sourced ingredients.

Delmonicos 1837 before

3. Delmonico’s  (1837)

New York’s first steackhouse. Delmonico’s is the name of various New York City restaurants of varying duration, quality, and fame.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Delmonico family managed one of the first and most famous iterations at 56 Beaver Street in Lower Manhattan, earning a reputation as one of the country’s finest fine dining establishments.

The restaurant is noted as being one of the first in the United States to enable customers to order from a menu à la carte rather than table d’hôte. It is also the birthplace of the widely imitated Delmonico steak. It is also considered to be the first restaurant to have its own wine selection.

Their 56 Beaver location is unfortunately temporarily closed, but you may order pickup or delivery from their location at 375 Lexington Avenue.

The Old Homestead Steakhouse, founded in 1868, is a steakhouse with a flagship location in Manhattan, New York City. The restaurant is the country’s oldest continuously functioning steakhouse.

The restaurant is senior to Keens and Peter Luger Steak House.

Food type:  Steaks, Meat.

When pet owners are looking at rental apartments in NYC, the happiness of the furry family members is often a top priority.

Some of the best apartments for rent in New York welcome your dogs and cats with open arms. Replay Listings is here to help you find them.

Of course, there’s always the factors the apartment buildings themselves can’t control, and a lot of them come down to the old mantra, “Location, location, location.” For pet owners, a big consideration is how close they can live to a pet-friendly park.

Here’s 10 of the best pet-friendly parks throughout New York City.

Sirius Dog Run - Battery Park, Manhattan for Replay Listings blog

10. Sirius Dog Run – Battery Park, Manhattan

We start our countdown with Sirius Dog Run in Battery Park, Manhattan. This dog run is part of the Kowsky Park Playground at 385 South End Avenue.

What makes it a standout in a city full of doggy destinations? Start with the elevated location, literally. The park is situated above the river walk. That gives it a year-round view worth checking out.

In warmer months, dogs lucky enough to have owners in the know will get to splash in the doggy pool. Even better, the small splash pool is drained on a timer, so the water is always fresh!

And for those who appreciate honoring one of the city’s heroes, this dog run is named for one of the Labrador Retrievers working with the Port Authority who lost his life in the World Trade Center attacks. “PAPD K-9 Sirius #17” was four years old and served as an explosives detector canine.

Verified Tips by Dog owners who have visited the park:

“Small but fun. Gated. Plenty of obstacles. Water spouts that fill a small swimming area for the pooches (Don’t worry, no mud. Fully lined asphalt park).” – Mickey

“Only downfall is asphalt – otherwise a great clean little run!” – Amanda, bringfido.com

“My service dog, a female yellow lab, had a great time splashing in the built in pool. [fills ups for about 15 minutes, drains automatically and re-fills] two small mounds, this morning a grounds keeper was cleaning the area, has benches, trees, water fountain, no clean up bags, make sure you bring your own. it is easy to get to # 4 train to bowling green than m20. highly recommend it.”

Are you considering a move? At Replay Listings, we can help you find a rental apartment in New York situated close to a pet-friendly park.

Rockaway Freeway Dog Run

9. Rockaway Freeway Dog Park – Queens

Rockaway Freeway Dog Park, located at Rockaway Freeway and Beach 84th Street, is the largest dog park in Queens. The NYC Parks even boasts that this dog park is big enough to offer special fenced-off areas for dogs that need a minute to themselves to calm down or just be on their own – a rare luxury in New York!

Arf-Arf, an organization dedicated to stewardship of dog parks in The Rockaways, hosts events here, including canine ice cream socials and costume parties.

And in the off-season, Rockaway Beach is one of the sandy spots you can take your leashed dog for a frolick! Make sure to hit the beach with your pooch between October and May.

Verified Testimonials by Dog-owners who have visited the park:

“I happened to bump into this park by accident, and I can’t think of any better accident to have. @Cheweries absolutely loved the park because she got to run around without being judged.”

“This is a great dog park with three sections. The first gated area is accessible from the main gate and it usually has small dogs. The main area has a track that owners and their dogs can walk or run around. And there’s also a gated-off area with a few pieces of doggie equipment for exercise. There’s no parking, but most people just park their car outside the park half on the sidewalk. Also, what would have been a great view of the bay is blocked by an MTA building. But it’s still a great spot to let your dog go off-leash. Gates are not high, but the dogs are having too much fun to try and escape. There are some extra slats to stop small dogs from escaping between bars. Sometimes it’s empty, but even with 15-20 dogs on a Saturday afternoon there’s still plenty of room for everyone.”

8. Carl Schurz Park – Upper East Side, Manhattan

Also located on the edge of Manhattan, this beautiful park offers two fenced-in dog runs. While there are no approved off-leash hours outside these dog-run areas, you’ll find this park a stop worth making. Gorgeous gardens and winding paths lead you to the two dog runs, divided by dog size, creating an escape from the chaos of the city streets.

Also note that the ASPCA, located nearby, has exclusive access to the dog runs on Wednesday and Thursday between 12:15 pm and 1:15 pm. What a treat for dogs waiting to find their forever homes!

Brooklyn Bridge Park & Dog Run - DUMBO, Brooklyn

7. Brooklyn Bridge Park & Dog Run – DUMBO, Brooklyn

Brooklynites know, there’s one thing they’ll always be able to boast about that residents of Manhattan just can’t top. If you want the million-dollar views of the Manhattan skyline… you have to leave Manhattan!

Brooklyn Bridge Park is a bustling 85-acre park stretching along the revitalized Brooklyn waterfront with must-do activities and a number of events and concessions. There are two dog runs here, at Main Street and Pier 6, offering shade and one has a rubber floor – an uncommon option in a city full of gravel, sand, and paved dog parks!

Just remember that DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, and the Main Street dog run is literally under the bridge. With the trains running overhead along the bridge, it’s not always the quietest setting.

Hudson River Park Tribeca Dog Run Pet Friendly Parks NYC Replay Listings

5. TriBeCa Dog Run at Pier 26 – Hudson River Park, Manhattan

Hudson River Park steals a second spot on the list with another of the park’s four dog runs. The TriBeCa Dog Run at Pier 26 has separate sections for small and large dogs.

What really sets this park apart from the rest, aside from the classic pier location, are the unique features for both pets and parents. While the dogs can enjoy the water features, including a splash pad with sprinklers, owners can watch comfortably from beneath the shade umbrellas, an infrequent and welcome amenity!

Verified Tips by Dog owners who have visited the park:

“Not the best dog park in the world but for Manhattan standards, it’s the best you can expect.

Decent amount of space, right next to the water and nicely fenced off from the outside bikers and joggers.  The only problem, besides the fact that there’s not a TON of room to run around, is that it’s also pretty close to a really noisy street.  If your dog isn’t a big fan of huge trucks going to and fro, this might be a problem…then again, it’s NYC.  You’ll pretty much have to go to Central Park or Prospect Park to find something really secluded.

Not bad, all in all, especially if the weather’s nice.”

Dumond A. via Yelp.com

“Excellent clean and dog-friendly place to have your pooch run around and play fetch in an enclosed area. there are double doors so you don’t have to worry about someone opening the door and the dog gets out. there is a park for the bigger dogs and there is an enclosure for the smaller dogs. so for people who are wary of that, they cater to both parties. I love the fact they have cement and not sand or dirt.

I don’t understand why dog parks have sand or dirt because that can get caught in the dog’s fur and then you don’t want to end up washing your dog every time they come back from the dog park. I saw owners play fetch with their dogs & the dogs were happily running tongues out. in the other enclosure for the smaller dogs, there’s a water hose for people who want to have a rinse”

Dog Friendly Prospect Park - Brooklyn by Replay Listing apartments for rent in nyc

4. Prospect Park – Brooklyn

Prospect Park, one of the premier parks in Brooklyn, is the epitome of dog-friendly.

Several acres of fields offer off-leash hours from 6am to 9am and 9pm to 1am, and there is a newly dedicated, fenced, dog run at the Prospect Park Parade Ground.

Even better, if your dog likes to splash around while enjoying the city’s finest nature, there is the dedicated Dog Beach where dogs are welcome to swim – which is hard to find in the city!

Just note that in the warmer months you should follow all posted signs or check ProspectPark.org for information on whether it is safe to swim. In the warmer months harmful algae blooms can occur, and it’s always important to be sure you’re swimming safely!

Verified Tips by Dog owners who have visited the park:

“Not a dog run but a very big open area, “long meadow,” for dogs to chase each other in during off-leash hours (before 9am). Even has a “beach” for the dogs. They fence off a part of a lake for dogs to swim in during the summer. My dog has never jumped in yet. I’m too chicken and so is she! But all the other dogs that go, love it. The owners throw a ball in and the dog runs and swims to fetch it! It’s just cool to watch the dogs in action here!

It’s a real park that’s well maintained. The dog never gets that dirty here. Always lots of dogs to play within the mornings, especially on weekends. Walk-in from any of the park’s entrances, pass the bike/runners path until you get to a big open grassy area with many dogs running around.

It’s my dog’s favorite place to be. Fun for adults also!”

Elizabeth N. via Yelp.com

Central Park NYC pet friendly

3. Central Park Dog Park – Manhattan

Manhattan’s Central Park, the crown jewel of planned greenspace in New York City, spans 843 acres and hosts endless events, from movie nights for the masses to hundreds of private picnics daily.

The Central Park Conservancy lists many areas that are particularly dog-friendly which you should check out, which you can find on their map

While Central Park does offer off-leash hours from 6am to 9am and 9pm to 1am, make sure to follow all posted signs. Not all areas of the park allow off-leash dogs, and some areas don’t allow dogs at all. However, Central Park is big enough to offer ample space to enjoy the longest of adventurous walks with your dog!

Leash Rules and Regulations:

WHEN your dog needs to be leashed:  According to park rules, dogs can run off-leash before 9:00 a.m. and from 9:00 p.m to 1:00 a.m. Between those hours, though, your dog needs to be leashed up.

WHERE your dog needs to be leashed:  Arthur Ross Pinetum, Bridle Path, Cedar Hill, Children’s Glade (Great Hill area), Conservatory Garden, East Green, Kerbs Boathouse Plaza, The North Woods and The Ravine, The Ramble, Shakespeare Garden, Strawberry Fields, Turtle Pond Lawn, Park Drives (always leash dogs when on or crossing the drives and use marked recreation lane and crosswalks), all areas where signs requiring dogs to be leashed are posted, and All Lawns posted as 9:00 am areas.

Dogs are never allowed at: Elm Islands at the Mall, Great Lawn Oval, Hallet Nature Sanctuary, Lilac Walk, Reservoir running track, Sheep Meadow, and all ballfields and recreational courts, all playgrounds, all sand volleyball courts, all bodies of water, streams, and ornamental fountains.

Pet-friendly Areas In Central Park, New York

The Central Park Conservancy, the group that manages and maintains Central Park, says there are 23 dog-friendly areas around the park. Some of these areas include:

  • Harlem Meer
  • East Meadow
  • Cedar Hill
  • Mineral Springs.

You can get a map of these dog-friendly areas from the Conservancy’s website or below.

In addition, there are 29 dog fountains throughout the park. It’s important to keep your dog well-hydrated when you visit the part to prevent dehydration. If you are bringing your pet to Central Park, the Conservancy asks that you have your dog drink from the specially designated fountains instead of from regular water fountains.

Start with Jemmy’s Dog Run, with ample benches for pet parents and mature trees offering shade to all visitors. This is another of the dedicated dog areas that allow large and small dogs to have their own space with two separate dog runs.

The entire park, spanning three city blocks, is worth touring. No matter what your next destination, make sure to stop by the original Shake Shack before moving on. You can grab a burger and a shake while your pet enjoys a Pooch-ini custard or a Bag O’Bones, biscuit treats!

Come Halloween, there’s no place else to be. Tompkins Square Park hosts the biggest Halloween costume contest for dogs, attracting pet owners and pet-less spectators alike.

Year-round, this spot still can’t be beaten. The dog run here is the first and largest dog run in Manhattan. Like many of the more spacious dog parks, you’ll again find separate areas for large and small dogs. Renovated in recent years, the small dog park now also offers a section with artificial grass. Let your dogs roam here and feel the astroturf beneath their toes!

“I’ve known Carlos for 15 years and all I can say is how professional and helpful he is. As a real estate agent, he is very informative, resourceful, and patient. He quickly responds to your inquires and will present your best options.

He was my go-to when I had questions about purchasing my very first home and continues to be when looking for future investments. I’ve referred him to my brother and friends because I know they’re going to the best service in NYC.”

“Carlos has immense knowledge as a realtor which immediately put me at ease with the information he provided in understanding the housing process. He also walked me through any difficult questions that I had, which helped me immensely. The process is an extensive one, and he was available every step of the way. As a client, he made sure that I understood everything and that I was comfortable before making a decision.

Furthermore, he was very punctual. This is extremely important when time availability is at a premium for me. Having a realtor that values my time is key. I knew that Carlos would value me as a client regardless of my income. I was surprised that he even called me days later to follow up, to make sure I was comfortable with my decision. That impressed me to know that he cared for my well-being as a human being, and not just a number to be filled.

In closing, I hope I never need a realtor again, but if I do I will immediately be calling Carlos.

Most Recent Testimonials

“I have nothing but praise to give to Alessandra for her help. Her actions made selecting my apartment virtually from Ohio so much easier. Every step of the way she would send photos and videos of the building, the neighborhood, the parks – even getting me specific dimensions of parts of the rooms so I could prepare my furniture selections for the move.

Thank you so much Alessandra for being so on top of it and giving me the confidence I needed in selecting an apartment that I couldn’t visit in person.”

– Fern, June 2021

“Alessandra is exceptionally kind, knowledgeable, and competent at her craft. As someone who has lived abroad and in the South for most of his life, she made a meaningful difference in helping me navigate the New York City rental market. She was patient and took the time to understand my work situation, lifestyle essentials, and the things I was willing to be flexible on in finding a place.

Moreover, she was always receptive to my inquiries and I never had any issues receiving her input in a timely and informative manner. It was an absolute pleasure working with her and she made my transition to New York so much more seamless than it may have been otherwise. I’m confident that you’d have a similar experience in working with Alessandra.”

“Yousaf was amazing to work with! We looked for an apartment during covid, and were worried about renting without seeing it in person. Not only did he facetime us in, show us all the specs, and send photos and videos afterwards, he went out of his way to show us other units in the nearby area until we found our perfect match! We are so excited about the unit he found for us, and it checked every box!”

Roughy 152,813 people call West Village home. A community rich in history, culture, and art.

The West Village historically is recognized as a bohemian community filled with artists, intellectuals, and creatives. Currently, it has become the epicenter for A-List celebrities and is currently experiencing high levels of gentrification.

According to the US Census Report of 2016, its residents are currently 7% Latino, 2.3% Black, 72% White, and 16% Asian. The vast majority of families and residents live in multifamily housing, more specifically, 85% live in housing with 10 or more units in a 2.9 square miles radius. In addition, 34% of housing is two bedroom apartments and three bedroom apartments. This supports a population density of 52,694 people per square mile, compared to NYC at 30,000 people per square mile or roughly, 2 times more densely populated than Manhattan.

West Village density is what provides for a culturally rich and lively environment. In addition, its mix of studio apartment rentals, 1 bedroom apartment rentals, 2 bedroom apartment rentals and 3 bedroom apartment rentals support a diverse, thriving community.

Check out the video below, which will tour you through the West Village neighborhood with our partner James Marcolin.

In addition, West Village is home to classic and unique cultural centers and amenities that support its bohemian feel with a splash of A-List celebrity glamour.

The Gay Liberation monument, a sculpture by George Segal honors the gay rights movement and commemorates the events at the Stonewall Inn opposite this park that gave rise to the movement. It depicts four figures in total—two standing men, and two seated women.

The Parks Department says, “the result is specific, evocative, and understated, showing the public comfort and freedom to which the gay liberation movement aspired.”

In addition, prolific American author James Baldwin called the West Village home for 20 years. West Village also offers convenient access to the High Line, an elevated, linear green park that was transformed from an abandoned rail yard. The park extends from Gansevoort Street to 34th Street. At 30th Street the elevated tracks turn west around the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on 34th Street, the northern section is expected to be integrated with the Hudson Yards development and the Hudson Park and Boulevard.

Continually, West Village has become defined by its bohemian nature and celebrity status. On June 19, 2018, Curbed published an article profiling 25 historic LGBTQ sites to visit commemorating the neighborhood as a site of activism, progressive thinking, and a site of the defense of civil rights.

The progressive, artistic nature of the West Village makes it a hit amongst A-list celebrities. In addition, WhereTraveler.com states, ““In the West Village, The Spotted Pig continues to be a celebrity favorite, in addition to being co-owned by celebrity Chef Mario Batali.

The list of famous faces that have stopped by the seasonal British and Italian restaurant could go on and on. From Jay Z and Beyoncé to Taylor Swift, Kirsten Dunst, Ryan Gosling and Maggie, and Jake Gyllenhaal, everyone loves The Spotted Pig—making it the ideal place to spot someone well known.””
